I, Avisha Shah, student of class X A, write this letter to thank the Principal and management for organizing the seminar ‘ Being a responsible netizen’ on Friday, 30 th June 2017 in the school. The theme was very interesting for all of us as we could identify with it in many ways, given our current digital lifestyle. All of us are now teenagers and social media has been playing a crucial part in our daily life. We were very engrossed in the session as the presenter was great at establishing a rapport with each one of us. More than half of my classmates have been a part of the social media world for the past few years now and so far it has been a great experience for us. What many of us did not know was the dark side of the same fascinating world. The presenter familiarized us to many concepts we did not know. She spoke to us about cyber crime, cyber morphing, stalking, gambling and much more. She also informed us about the cyber cell and how it functions. She narrated some real life cases from India involving some of these cyber crimes, relating to the worst effects of social media on the lives of common people. Listening to these stories, we were alerted to how easily we could be betrayed through social media and fake accounts that people make on it. We realized that just uploading a photograph too could destroy the life of a person, if we don’t take necessary precautions. We were also instructed on how we can keep problems at bay by adopting simple measures like changing our account passwords after regular intervals, not accepting friend requests from strangers, letting our parents know about our passwords and social. The seminar has been a great eye opener for us to stay safe from all such problems. Although we have been using social media for a long time now, we did not know about such basic issues. Now that we know about these issues, we will be more alert and not let cyber criminals roll upon us. We shall make sure that we inform the cyber crime department if we ever face such problems. We are thankful we could be a part of this informative seminar.
