Ever since we opened up the new library space earlier this academic year, we have been trying to do little acts of curation in the library. Every few weeks we put together a book display in the library to make books more exciting and appealing for students. Curated book displays allow children to discover, sample and savour books related to a particular theme or event or author. When selected books are pulled out and displayed, it allows students to focus on a smaller collection, it piques their interest and they pick a book they otherwise may never have.
In our maiden run, we have had at least six such displays ranging from themes like animals, Hiroshima, to travel to displays focussed on authors like Roald Dahl and Priya Kuriyan. We’re ending the year with a magical and exciting display to bring in some much needed Christmas cheer. Despite everything that happens around us we must remain hopeful.
The first exciting thing we did was to work with a few students to put up our very own CHRISTMAS TREE OF BOOKS!
Children worked with us to stack up the books, trim the tree and light it up.
We pulled out books that we had on the theme of Christmas for display. This display was available for 2-3 weeks and children were later allowed to borrow titles they wanted before the school shut for the Christmas break.
There was one last surprise we had for the students. We wanted them to ‘unwrap a good book.’

Keeping with the Christmas spirit of gifting we wrapped a set of new books we had just received in the library and put them up on display. This generated a sense of curiosity and suspense….children couldn’t wait to pick a book and unwrap it to find out what’s inside! The after-school regulars didn’t miss the opportunity to come by and pick up a book. We hope they’re now wrapped up in a good book and will come back for more in the new year!

It is so important to spark a sense of curiosity.
While I love books, I do hope to also learn more unique ways of using school spaces such as corridors, stairs, the terrace, etc. You have led the way to seeing that education is about more than just the classroom 🙂
